One extremely good use for birth control pills in perimenopause is to resolve frequent, irregular bleeding. I'll often prescribe 3 months of birth control pills, which functions to create uniformity throughout the uterine lining so it can fully shed. I liken this to a "reboot". Once the uterine lining is behaving in a predictable way, my preference, when it also works for the patient, is to switch to bioidentical cyclic hormones. This way, we can keep the uterine lining on a predictable schedule, treat perimenopausal symptoms like hot flashes and brain fog, and also get long term benefits like bone protection.
