On the other hand, we celebrate the dead, as we know the lives they lived. This is therefore, my way to celebrate the life of my father, Don Samuel. There is a moment after death—a strange silence that hums louder than grief. It is not the absence of a voice, but the presence of something else. Something felt. In the days following my father’s passing, I felt him. This was not sentimentality. It wasn’t a memory replaying itself. It was presence—as though he stood beside me, just behind the veil. No more words passed between us than in the last 40 years combined, but in those few days, he was closer than he had ever been. I couldn’t touch him, but I could feel him. Not in the abstract, but in the real. And then… he faded. Some might say it was just my psyche adjusting to the finality of death, rewriting itself for survival. Maybe that’s true. But that explanation is incomplete. Because something resolved itself. An equation balanced. A loop closed. You see, I didn’t just mourn him—I acknowledged him. I faced the complexity of our history and poured it into a piece of music that became both requiem and revelation. I composed not just melody, but meaning. I scored every emotion a child might have for a parent—grief, gratitude, resentment, admiration, and that deep, unspoken love that time and distance cannot erode. And I wrote. I named him. I honored him. Not as a man idealized, but as a man real. In doing so, I didn’t let go—I anchored him. I made him part of the architecture of my soul. I became the evidence that he had walked this Earth. In that act of creation, I didn’t just process loss. I transformed it. His presence dissipated not because it was imagined, but because its purpose was fulfilled. The conversation between us had ended—not abruptly, but naturally. Completely. He is not lost. He is absorbed. He is now in me. In my work. In my choices. In my breath. This is not about religion or metaphysics. It’s about the truth of legacy: that death does not erase—it distills. When grief is faced with full creative power, the spirit does not haunt—it transmits. So yes, I felt him. And then, I became him. Not in his likeness, but in continuation. And in doing so, I know I did right by him. In his passing, Don Samuel did not vanish— He evolved. And so did I. Given 2 bars of the same length and #tempo (stacked vertically), a polyrhythm would be dividing the upper bar into 4 beats and the lower one into 3 beats. ☆ A #polymeter is where two sequences are played using different meters, but with the same tempo. For example a pattern that repeats a sequence over 5/4 played against one repeating over 4/4. ☆ #Phasing is a compositional technique in which the same part is played on two musical instruments, in steady but not identical tempi. Thus, the two instruments gradually shift out of unison, creating, first a slight echo as one instrument plays a little behind the other, then a doubling effect with each note heard twice, then a complex ringing effect, and eventually coming back through ☆ #Counterpoint is the relationship between two or more musical lines (or voices) which are harmonically #interdependent yet #independent in rhythm & melodic contour. ☆ The term #mode or modus is used in a number of distinct senses, depending on context. Its most common use may be described as a type of musical scale coupled with a set of characteristic melodic & harmonic behaviors.
