In mid-February 1989, the Chicago Bulls returned to the "Madhouse on Madison" looking to snap a funk that had seen them lose six of their previous eight games. Facing a depleted but gritty Milwaukee Bucks squad, the Bulls found themselves in a dangerous hole, trailing by 12 points early in the fourth quarter. What transpired in the final 12 minutes was a record-breaking offensive clinic that forced the Chicago Stadium history books to be rewritten. For much of the night, the Bucks controlled the tempo behind Jack Sikma’s 26 points and 10 rebounds. However, Michael Jordan, playing on the eve of his 26th birthday, flipped a switch in the final period. Jordan played 40 minutes and finished with a massive 50 points on an ultra-efficient 16-of-26 shooting, but it was his closing kick that defined the performance. He poured in 27 points in the fourth quarter alone—breaking the Stadium record held by Wilt Chamberlain and Pete Maravich—dragging the Bulls back from the brink with a relentless attack that included an automatic 17-of-18 performance from the free-throw line. The game’s climax was pure chaos. With the Bulls trailing 116-113 in the final seconds, the defense scrambled to force a turnover. After a Scottie Pippen layup cut the lead to one, the Bucks imploded on the inbound, allowing Pippen to steal the ball and find Jordan. Jordan raced downcourt, later admitting, "I saw five guys, so I just pulled up and shot it." His 16-footer with one second remaining found the bottom of the net, capping a 117-116 victory. "Only one guy in the league could do what was done to us tonight," lamented Bucks coach Del Harris. "Unfortunately, he was in a Bulls uniform." While the Bucks left battered—losing Fred Roberts to a fractured cheekbone earlier in the game—Jordan’s 39-point second half tied another Chamberlain record, serving as a reminder that in 1989, no lead against Chicago was safe as long as number 23 was on the floor.
