In the first part of this series, we explore various methods for designing residential footings in accordance with the Australian Standard AS2870-2011, specifically focusing on how to account for the impact of trees. We discuss the process and methodology of footing design, considering factors such as centre and edge heave caused by the effect of trees. We also briefly cover the code method found in Appendix H and the Foundation and Footing Society method described in the commentary section CH5. Additionally, we introduce the beam on mound model, which considers the tree-induced mound height which includes the normal profile soil characteristics and surface movement (ys), as well as the design tree movement value (yt).
