In this twenty-first class of Atma Bodha, we review verses 47–49 and then proceed to verses 50–52. Verse 50 presents a bird’s-eye view of the journey of the Jīvanmukta through the story of Rāma and Sītā. Rāma represents the Ātma, while Sītā represents Śāntiḥ - the peace, fullness, and completeness that is the very nature of the Ātmā. The Jīva, due to Self-ignorance, “loses” this inherent peace, only to “regain” it through the destruction of ignorance by Self-knowledge. The verse draws various parallels between Rama's journey to Sita and the Jiva's journey to Śanti, his own real nature. The Jīvanmukta then abides, rejoicing in this fullness. Verse 51 explains what it means for the Jīvanmukta to revel in the Self. Finding contentment and satisfaction within, his mind no longer runs after the pleasures of the external world. We discuss why Vedānta highlights the limitations of worldly pleasures and cautions seekers against becoming dependent on them. Verse 52 describes the unaffected and unattached nature of the Jīvanmukta - like space, untouched by all that occurs within it, and like the wind, ever free and unattached. Though he moves among the ignorant and outwardly lives like anyone else, inwardly he abides in Knowledge. Satyan Chidambaran is a full-time student of Vedanta and Sanskrit.
