Dear Malaysia, Your "Solidarity" Is Helping Us Go Broke.

Malaysia's politicians are out here congratulating themselves for standing in solidarity with Iran — as if allowing our ships through the Strait of Hormuz is some kind of diplomatic trophy, while conveniently ignoring the fact that Iran's blockade of a global chokepoint responsible for 20% of the world's oil supply is precisely why your fuel prices have gone through the roof. The same people cheering on burning US dollars are the ones who will show up to protest rising oil prices without ever connecting those two dots. The irony is almost poetic, except it's not funny when real Malaysians are the ones footing the bill. There is a particular kind of delusion at work when politicians — completely insulated from the cost of living — go on television to declare that our solidarity with the Ummah has strengthened our diplomatic standing, while the average Malaysian is quietly watching petrol and diesel prices climb. These are people who can afford to support the flying spaghetti monster and not feel a thing. The ordinary Malaysians cheering along on Facebook and TikTok, however, cannot say the same, and they are going to be the last ones to realise that the entity they are celebrating is the very one holding the global economy hostage. At the end of the day, this is not really about justice — it is about wish fulfilment dressed up in the language of religion and resistance. When your solidarity costs other people their grocery budgets, their subsidies, and their tax ringgit, it stops being noble and starts being reckless. Go woke, go broke is not just a slogan.
