Thumb Hypoplasia: Three Treatment Options

This video shows a medical consultation with a patient with thumb hypoplasia. I outlined 3 treatment options for the patient and parents: 1) pollicization which removes the thumb and turns the index finger into a thumb; 2) transplant metatarsal (foot bone) to reconstruct the thumb bone; 3) transplant metacarpal (hand bone) to reconstruct the thumb. These treatments will result in varying degrees of outcomes in terms of function and appearance, but they are all good methods to treat this birth defect. Parents and the patient needs to consider what they want to achieve before making a judgement.
