The book of Jonah is not a children’s story about a fish. It is a confrontation between human pride and divine mercy. Jonah was commanded by God to go to Nineveh, a violent and wicked city, and call it to repentance. Instead, Jonah ran in the opposite direction toward Tarshish, attempting to escape the presence of the Lord. What follows is a descent into chaos, discipline, mercy, and ultimately a question that God leaves unanswered. Jonah 1 shows rebellion and flight from God’s calling. Jonah 2 records Jonah’s prayer from the depths and the truth that salvation belongs to the Lord. Jonah 3 reveals the shocking repentance of Nineveh and God’s compassion toward even the worst of sinners. Jonah 4 exposes Jonah’s anger, pride, and resentment toward God’s mercy. The story ends without resolution, forcing the listener to examine their own heart. Do we love God’s justice more than His mercy. Do we rejoice when enemies repent. Do we obey God only when it aligns with our preferences. This project draws directly from Jonah 1 through 4, with lyrical references to Jonah 1:3, Jonah 1:15, Jonah 2:1 to 2:10, Jonah 3:5 to 3:10, and Jonah 4:1 to 4:11. 00:00 Tarshish Bound 03:27 Three Days In The Dark 08:05 Nineveh Repents 13:02 Better To Die LYRICS Track 1: Tarshish Bound The word came down from the heights above Nineveh's sins a city of blood But I ain't goin' no chains on me I'll run to the sea set my spirit free Joppa's docks the ship sets sail Tarshish calls beyond the pale Waves crash high the sky turns black God's storm is comin' no turnin' back Tarshish bound runnin' from the light Storm's ragin' gonna own the night Cast me down let the deep take hold Rebel heart defiant and cold Tarshish bound no fear in my eyes I'll flee forever from the Lord's disguise Sailors cry out pray to their gods Lots are cast point straight at the fraud I confess the truth it's all on me Heave me over set the tempest free Into the foam the darkness calls Swallowed by wrath the prophet falls Thunder roars the sea's alive No escape from the One who strives Down down to the depths I go But even there His mercy shows Track 2: Three Days in the Dark Down I went into the deep abyss Waves closed over me no light no kiss Weeds wrapped round my head like chains of sin Bars of the earth shut tight the end begins From the belly of Sheol I cried in pain Salt and darkness driving me insane I called to the Lord from the grave below Out of my affliction He heard my woe Three days in the dark swallowed whole From the fish's belly I lost control You heard my voice from the realm of death Brought me back with Your saving breath Salvation rises from the deep despair Lord of mercy You were there Waters compassed me even to the soul The deep closed round billows took their toll I sank to the bottoms of the mountains old Earth with her bars was my prison cold Yet I remembered You in my darkest hour My prayer came up to Your holy tower They that observe lying vanities forsake Their own mercy in the choices they make But I will look again toward Your holy place With the voice of thanksgiving I'll lift my face Sacrifice to You what I vowed in fear Salvation is of the Lord crystal clear Track 3: Nineveh Repents The word came twice no room to flee Arise go preach to Nineveh that wicked sea Of blood and idols exceeding great Three days journey through her gate I walked the streets dust on my feet Crying doom in forty days complete Yet they believed the God on high From greatest to least they turned from lie Nineveh falls to its knees Sackcloth on the king ashes in the breeze They fasted cried turned from their sin The Lord looked down pulled back the din Mercy poured on the wicked horde God relented from the sword Nineveh repents undeserved grace King rose from throne laid down his crown Decreed no food no water down Man and beast in mourning cloth Cry mightily turn from wrath Who can tell if God will see And spare this city of idolatry I watched from afar on the hill so high Expecting fire to rain from the sky But no brimstone came no thunder's roar Just mercy flowing forevermore The prophet's heart began to burn For grace I preached but hate returned Mercy triumphs over doom declared But in my soul the anger flared Track 4: Better to Die I knew You were this way gracious and kind Slow to anger mercy never confined That's why I fled to Tarshish shore To watch Nineveh burn forevermore But You spared them all the wicked throng Now my heart boils my soul is wrong Sun beat down wind like a blade I fainted under the heat unafraid I begged for death let it come swift Why spare them Lord give me this gift You ask if I'm right to be angry so But I say yes till my breath is low Should I not pity Nineveh great and wide More than a hundred twenty thousand souls Who cannot tell left from right in their roles And much cattle should they not be spared #Jonah #BiblicalMetal #ChristianMetal #MetalWorship #TestamentOfSteel
