(28 Oct 2019) Iraqi citizens living in Baghdad reacted with scepticism on Monday to the killing of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that al-Baghdadi died after detonating a suicide belt during an operation conducted by American special forces in Syria's northwestern Idlib province. The shadowy leader of the Islamic State group presided over its global jihad and became arguably the world's most wanted man. Some residents of Iraq's capital said they were not confident that his killing would weaken the Islamic State group, as he would be replaced by another figurehead. "These organisations, often, do not lose their symbolism because of a killing of their leader," said political analyst, Husham Alhashemi. Hadi Sultan, a resident of Baghdad, also supported this view. "One Baghdadi goes out another comes in; it's the same old story," he said. The death of al-Baghdadi was a milestone in the fight against IS, which brutalised swaths of Syria and Iraq and sought to direct a global campaign from a self-declared "caliphate." A yearslong campaign by American and allied forces led to the recapture of the group's territorial holding, but its violent ideology has continued to inspire attacks.
