(19 Sep 2017) FASHION HITS AND MISSES AT THE EMMY AWARDS The stars turned out in their Hollywood best on the red carpet of the 69th prime-time Emmy ceremony in Los Angeles Sunday (17SEPT2017). One of the standouts of the night according to Refinery29 feature writer Connie Wang, was Westworld star Tessa Thompson. "Tessa Thompson wore a indie designer, Rosie Assoulin's dress, on the red carpet and you don't really see a lot of smaller labels like her represented at awards shows like this but it was a really great moment, not only because of the designer behind it, but the dress itself was so beautiful. she looked like the princess version of the rainbow fish or something. There were so many colors involved, it changed depending on what angle you were looking at it from and when she spun around it was really a great moment but the greatest thing about that dress was that it wasn't so princessy or precious. It really felt defiant and fierce and statement making and strong but not traditionally feminine which I really loved." Wang also liked Jane Fonda's pink Brandon Maxwell gown. "I personally really loved Jane Fonda. She wore this pink column dress with this attached cape by Brandon Maxwell and she looked so so so good not just for her age but just generally. Objectively speaking she was a queen." She was less impressed with "The Handmaid's Tale" star Elisabeth Moss who she said played it too safe. "Especially if you're nominated you really want to show up in something that really exemplifies who you are as an actress but also who you're character is," said Wang. "Elisabeth Moss had a really really great role in 'The Handmaid's Tale' and I think she really kind of missed an opportunity this awards season. She wore a Prabal Gurung pink dress that was strapless and about tea-length and it was really pretty dress, but it was also very safe and I think she had a lot of things - she had a big opportunity to say something about you know what her role was, what it said about women, what it said about the role of clothing in a society and she really didn't communicate any of that with her dress which is really safe, but again pretty, but said really nothing." Moss didn't win best dressed on the red-carpet according to Wang, but she did take home an Emmy - her first - for outstanding lead actress in a drama role on "The Handmaid's Tale."
