Child care providers are not just caregivers. They are employers. Hear from providers themselves in this video talking about the strains of operating with too little funding. Across Louisiana, early childhood education centers are struggling with the same challenges facing many businesses: finding and retaining staff. The biggest barriers are funding and wages. Providers need people to run classrooms, but finding the funding to pay and keep educators is extremely difficult. Most available grants pay for things like materials or equipment, not for staff salaries. That leaves providers trying to cover payroll with limited resources, even as costs rise. At the same time, public funding for early childhood education in Louisiana has been insufficient for years. The strain reaches families, too. With the child care assistance waitlist growing every month, parents are left without options, and providers cannot expand capacity without the staff to do so. If we want a stable child care system, we must treat providers like the employers they are and invest in the workforce that makes early childhood education possible.
