Sustainable river management : the perspective of a young professional – C. Staentzel – I.S.Rivers

Member of an interdisciplinary laboratory, l’UMR 7362 CNRS LIVE - Laboratoire Image, Ville, Environnement de Strasbourg, Cybill Staentzel was able to discover with her doctoral work in 2018, mathematical tools or tools from geography, whose potential in fundamental research applied in this field could be great. She shares with us her work on methods for evaluating restoration actions developed at the Upper Rhine, but also on the characterization of biodiversity dynamics. A teacher at ENGEES, Cybill insists on the new knowledge that must be acquired by future water professionals in order to act in favor of the rivers of tomorrow. 0:00 : Introduction 0:43 : Training course and activities 6:43 : Analysis of activities and perspective through the levers of action 12:45 : Challenges of tomorrow and evolution of the water professions 16:46 : Conclusion Imbued with a solid experience in watercourse sciences following doctoral studies carried out on the aquatic & terrestrial flora and fauna of the Upper Rhine, Cybill Staentzel started her career working on an international river with conservation and restoration issues that extend far beyond the French territory. Her research activities focus on the evaluation of the benefits of restoration work in aquatic environments - from large rivers to headwaters - the primary objective of which is the re-establishment of functional processes to instill a dynamic of maintaining or restoring biodiversity. Currently, Cybill Staentzel holds a teaching and research position at the “École Nationale du Génie de l'Eau et de l'Environnement de Strasbourg” (ENGEES, LIVE laboratory : Image, City, Environment), where she is involved in several national and international projects in order to produce knowledge on large rivers, promote scientific monitoring of biodiversity data in these environments. She aims to transfer knowledge to younger generations for a sustainable conciliation of humans and terrestrial/aquatic ecosystems. As part of the "River management : the perspective of young professionals" conference Cybill Staentzel shared a view on the sustainable management of rivers and streams. This webinar is organized by ZABR, Graie and H2O'Lyon. This international conference is dedicated to research and practices on natural and human-impacted large rivers, in particular how they work, changes and processes, interface and interactions, management policies, engineering. The I.S.Rivers conference concentrates on state of the art management strategies and lessons learned from individual case studies. Particular consideration is given to the integration of the physical, ecological and social perspectives of the different stakeholders involved in river management (governance, economy, culture), which is reflected in the title of the conference (“Integrative Sciences for rivers”).
