A couple years I got this 3 CD set unofficial release of Led Zeppelin live recordings from January 1969 - August 1969 called "Transmission Impossible" (looks to be released in 2020 from the label "Eat To The Beat"). Recently I've been studying these amazing soundboard recordings from one of the "Fillmore West," CA, shows on January 11, 1969 and looking to complete all 5 recordings. I was inspired because it's January 2026 here, and I started thinking Zeppelin in January 1969. The ICY COLD WEATHER here on the east coast of the US got me in the spirt HAHAHA. It just snowed this morning. It is going to take some time as there are a lot of parts to memorize, and BONHAM WAS ON FIRE at this show. VERY BUSY! Although I did not, and will not mean to play anything note for note I do want to memorize some BIG PARTS and play his licks as close as possible of course for this series. I just want to add the "Bonham Motifs" but with my own improv and feel to be organic if I may add. This was recorded during Led Zeppelin's first 1968 / 1969 US North American / Canada tour which commenced on December 26, 1968 (Denver Auditorium) and concluded on February 16, 1969 (Baltimore Civic Center). Led Zeppelin Peter Grant was originally going to take "The Jeff Beck Group" on the road to the US around this time in 1969, but instead took the fresh new Led Zeppelin group instead (since both groups shared the same office) to promote their debut album that would be release the day after this gig on January 12, 1969 in the US. Words of wisdom from Mr. Grant I couldn't go with them, but it was a fantastic 12 date tour, and they said "Great, if that's what we've gotta do, we'll go and do it" ... Three of the group had never been to America before and didn't know what to expect. They did a week with the Vanilla Fudge. My instructions were for them to go over there and blast them out. Make each performance something everybody remembered. They really did that." Led Zeppelin would be a supporting act for bands like "Vanilla Fudge," "Iron Butterfly," and " Country Joe & the Fish". Again, I guess that explains the MOTIONLESS, CRICKET SOUNDING, AWKWARD SILENCE FROM THE CROWD in between Jimmy's tune up on his Fender DRAGON telecaster. "Anybody got a Les Paul?" Robert Plant jokingly ask the crowd. Jimmy Page would receive his Gibson Les Paul #1 from James Gang's Joe Walsh maybe by March or April of 1969 at one of the either "Fillmore East" NYC, or "West" CA shows later. Jimmy always wanted a Les Paul to begin with. Just hard to get at the time. So again, the fans have not even heard the first album yet!! Plant even jokingly says something like "If we don't make it, then England will be glad to have us back" (something along those lines). Little did people know that LED ZEPPELIN WOULD BECOME THE NEW KINGS OF ROCK AND ROLL AND RESTRUCTURE THE NEW LANDSCAPE ACROSS THE GLOBE AND SHAPE HISTORY FOREVER. BLOWING BANDS OFF THE STAGE AND EVENTUALLY BECOMING HEADLINERS SHORTLY AFTER. By doing some research there are photos from "if not this particular gig but definitely from the other" "Fillmore West," gigs in January 1969 and looks to be John Bonham's Ludwig black diamond pearl kit (22" bass drum, 13" rack tom, 2 16" floor toms). Later auctioned off by Robert Plant in 2017ish. Supposedly Plant said the kit was also recorded for "When the Levee Breaks" for "Led Zeppelin IV" in 1971. Well, I think us BONZO BOZOS think that's just silly and is probably just Plant's old Golden head getting confused LOL!! But who knows right??? I believe the Ludwig Thermogloss kit that he is most famous for in the early Zeppelin years was ordered in late January of 1969. This would make sense since John Bonham was getting friendly with Vanilla Fudge's Carmine Appice who would be a friend, mentor, and a helper to get BONZO endorsed by Ludwig and help Bonham purchase an exact replica of Carmine's kit.
