The Winter Woes of the Boblo Ferry. Many non-residents of the area often wonder how the Boblo Ferry—and other year-round ferry services—manage to operate through freezing temperatures and harsh winter conditions. Throughout the year, the captain and crew of the Ste. Claire V contend with a wide range of challenges, including wind, weather, strong currents, waves, ongoing maintenance issues, and heavy marine traffic. Winter, however, introduces a unique and demanding set of obstacles. Extreme cold presents special difficulties on rivers and lakes, particularly when ice begins to form. For ferries like the Boblo Ferry, which operate on a regular schedule, the continual movement of the vessel helps keep the navigation channel open and passable. At times, tugboats are also brought in to assist by breaking up ice and keeping the route clear. However, when strong winds arise and ice begins to shift, navigation can quickly become more difficult. Moving ice flows have been known to push the ferry off course or downstream, occasionally requiring assistance to help the vessel safely return to its intended track.
