The Norwalk Transit District is being awarded a $2 million grant by the Connecticut Department of Transportation to pilot a new microtransit service. Microtransit is an affordable on-demand ride sharing service that people can use in real time with an app or by contacting NTD’s call center to request a ride. The service will be available throughout the City, Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM sometime this spring. This Pilot Program offers first-and-last mile integration with the regional bus network and with Metro North train stations in Norwalk. The service will fill in public transportation gaps by delivering transit accessibility to riders who are not currently served by the NTD bus system. The Pilot Program will serve residents, visitors, commuters, employees, businesses, students, seniors, and people with mobility impairments while encouraging fixed route ridership by seamlessly connecting riders to fixed route transit. It aims to enhance economic development and quality of life across the City by easily connecting people to places they need to go — jobs, healthcare, and educational facilities, including CT State Community College Norwalk. In partnership with NTD, Via, a leading software provider of TransitTech and the software company that supports NTD’s existing Wheels 2U technology, will be providing the turn-key service as part of the award. Through the grant, public transit in Norwalk will now reach areas with less population density and will be serviced by a mix of large buses, traditional ADA paratransit vehicles, and fuel-efficient minivans that are accessible to people with disabilities.
