A big upset! TSMC's expansion of its JASM fab in Japan was delayed, UMC Singapore was overjoyed.

GlobalFoundries' new CEO Tim Breen, who took over in late April, is exploring various transaction options, including a merger with UMC. Although the two sides have started negotiations, it remains uncertain whether the deal can be reached. UMC announced in early April that it would hold an opening ceremony for a new expanded plant in Singapore. The first phase of the new plant will begin mass production in 2026, and is expected to increase the total production capacity of UMC's Singapore Fab 12i wafer plant to more than 1 million 12-inch wafers per year.
