⛪The Peel Chapel and Mortuary in Overton on Dee, Wrexham, stands as a poignant example of Victorian history and architecture. Built in 1872 by Edmund Peel of the Bryn y Pys estate, the chapel and adjoining cemetery were created in loving memory of his first wife, Anna Maria Peel (née Lethbridge), who passed away in 1860. Originally, Anna Maria was buried in the Overton Church graveyard, but later, with the Bishop’s permission, she was reinterred at the new site which was established specifically for this purpose. 📈During the Victorian era, Overton on Dee faced increasing demand for burial space, largely driven by a rapidly growing population and public health concerns. In response, the mortuary chapel and cemetery were consecrated on June 17, 1872, and generously gifted to the parishioners of Overton. The site’s idyllic positioning offers striking views of the River Dee, reflecting the romantic ideals and landscape design trends of the period, with a preference for elevated and picturesque settings. 🏰Designed to be a focal point of the cemetery, Peel Chapel showcased elements typical of Victorian Gothic architecture. Though it fell into disuse and was even vandalized and burnt in the 1960s, restoration efforts by the Church in Wales and local residents have safeguarded its legacy as a vital village landmark. Today, the chapel stands as a testament to both personal grief and a community’s need for dignified remembrance, embodying the social and architectural innovations of its time.
