Between Hormuz and Malacca, circa 1600: The World of Port-Cities May 6, 2013 This lecture considers the region's port-cities as permeable, multi-ethnic, multicultural, and global places where a myriad of social interactions (including those rooted in violence and conflict) took place during the early modern period. Using the "Portuguese stratum" as its narrative thread, the discussion pays close attention to places like Hormuz, Goa, and Malacca. But it also stresses the importance of other "poorer" ports, with similar features, in which Portuguese adventurers and missionaries were very much involved.
