Gagaku is a Japanese Imperial Court Music and Dance. It was originally brought to Japan from the Chinese continent and it has been recognized as the oldest surviving music in Japan. It's enjoyed as music and also performed at ceremonies such as wedding receptions. At Ikuta shrine (with its own 800-year-old history) audience members have exclusive access to the main worship hall of the shrine as they are treated to a traditional ‘Gagaku’ performance. Before the performance, one of the head priests talks about the long and celebrated history of Ikuta Shrine, as well as the significance of Gagaku and its suprising and fascinating middle-eastern roots. Participants also have the opportunity to try on the traditional wear of the performers and to play their instruments.
