Language prescribes how we understand and describe the world around us. As times and cultures have changed, language has had to adapt accordingly and take an increasingly descriptive role. Social media has been a core driver in this process as it creates its own rules for language, with 140 character tweets, viral memes, and the increased reach and speed at which content is shared. One area that has produced particularly dynamic conversations has been the rising need for gender expansive terminology. This has been spurred by three main motivators: pushing the boundaries of language deemed restrictive, supporting a purposeful shift away from andro-centric language, and wanting to recognise gender identities beyond the binary. In this talk I will address how social media is used to create spaces where change can happen quickly, to expand the conversation on language and gender, and to share those alternative options widely.
