But it was actually the Honda Insight that was the first hybrid to go on sale here in the U.S. Back in 2000, the Honda Insight was a 2-seater that averaged more than 60 MPG on the highway. Today's Insight as you can see is a bit larger and can accommodate 4 passengers. The 2013 Honda Insight comes in 3 different trims: base, LX, and EX with prices ranging from $18,600 - $23,790. When you look at the 2013 Honda Insight with its rakish roofline and two-piece glass hatch, you might think Honda has copied the wedge design seen in the Toyota Prius. Well Honda was actually first to use this design with the first generation Insight. This EX test car comes equipped with 15-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in low rolling resistance tires. All Insight's come with blue tinted LED tail lights and the same tint on the front headlamps. The 2013 Honda Insight is a gas-electric hybrid which means it has a regular gas powered 4-cylinder engine, and electric assist motor, and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack that gets recharged via the regenerative braking system. What is a bit different about the Insight is that it is considered a mild-hybrid meaning the electric motor only assists the gasoline engine. The car does not have the ability to run on electricity alone which the Prius can do up to a certain point. The power output of the gas engine and electric motor combined is 98 horsepower and 123 ft-lb of torque. The Insight Hybrid is rated at 41 MPG in the city and 44 MPG on the highway. The hatchback design allows for a lot of storage and cargo space at 15.9 cubic feet with the rear seat up and 31.5 cubic feet with the seats folded down. The seats are comfortable as they sit tall and are firm. The gauge layout on the Insight is unique with the speedo integrated in a separate area above the tach.
