Great Hope for the Future Fukushima 8/19/2012 In September, 2012, I interviewed world famous Tomomi Nishimoto who plans to assume the role of music partner in the Japan philharmonic orchestra. At the time of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake on March 11th, 2011, Nishimoto felt a lot of trembling in her home in Tokyo. When she saw what had happened on the news, she felt so helpless. "So, when I heard about this event, I thought, 'I'm happy that Fukushima is inviting me' and I agreed to do it instantly." Nishimoto had been personally affected by the devastation from the Great Hanshin Earthquake. When she was in university, the old lodging house where she was living half collapsed due to earthquake damage. That experience gave her the motivation to help the recovery effort for the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake. Nishimoto strongly stated her passionate message, "I want to tell the young people that the world is watching them and that I want them to have great hope for the future. Because of that, I want to continue the journey with them." Although she gave a cool and dignified impression, Nishimoto shed tears during the interview as we talked about the earthquake. When she said, "Music is good, isn't it?", I thought to myself that she reflected so much charm. I feel strongly that Nishimoto will bring hope to the world, Japan, and certainly Fukushima with her recovery activities through music.
