This year saw the commemoration of the life of activist journalist Sol Plaatje, and the 100 year anniversary of his ground-breaking work “Native Life”, a critical gaze by Plaatje on the landmark Native Land Act of 1913 but also a distinctive body of work which held no prisoners in its observations. A new scholarly work, “Sol Plaatje’s Native Life in South Africa: Past and Present” edited by Dr Brian Willan and others will see extracts of the seminal work written by one of South Africa’s most talented early 20th-century black leaders and journalists. Dr Brian Willan and grandson of Sol Plaatje, Richard Plaatje joined Tim Modise to discuss this new work, and the significance of the retelling of Plaatje’s life in a modern day South Africa.
