History Following the victory in the Battle of Normandy, Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery proposed a single push northwards towards the Lower Rhine River to enable the British Second Army to pass the Siegfried Line safely and attack the Ruhr, one of Germany's most important industrial areas. The First Allied Airborne Army was tasked with capturing important bridges along the route of the Second Army. But, the mission soon turned into the creepiest battle of World War 2 when the German II SS Panzer Korps attacked the small British force that was present at a bridge in Arnhem, Netherlands. Outnumbered and short on supplies, a handful of British soldiers fought valiantly for nine days, resisting the heavy attack by the Wehrmacht and buying valuable time for the Allied forces.
