Following the release of ‘18 Piano Sutras & 25 South Asian Pianisms’, the double album of renowned composer-pianist Dr Tanya Ekanayaka https://naxos.lnk.to/NXW761632FA - here she performs and enlightens us about one of its particularly soothing compositions, the sutra ‘Seiri’ About Seiri “This sutra celebrates the expansiveness of the skies. ‘Seiri’ translates as ‘sky’ and belongs to the Garifuna (Karif) language, an at-risk minority language widely spoken in villages of the Garifuna people, who mostly inhabit the western part of the northern coast of Central America. Garifuna is a member of the Arawakan language family but an atypical one since it is spoken outside the Arawakan language area. In 2008, the Garifuna language, along with Garifuna music and dance, was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Seiri contains a transcreation of part of a song containing lyrics in the Garifuna language. I relish spending time gazing at the sky. The soft, long chords and slow-moving progressions of this sutra are inspired by the sight of large clouds gently enfolding their surroundings as they drift, change and disperse. The final climax contemplates the majesty and tranquillity of Earth’s skies whilst acknowledging their vital place within our eco system, without which there would be no life on Earth as known to us. Seiri was composed during the first four days of October 2021.” © Tanya Ekanayaka Composer: Dr Tanya Ekanayaka Performer: Dr Tanya Ekanayaka Album: 18 Piano Sutras & 25 South Asian Pianisms (NXW76163-2) Record Label: Naxos World Publisher: Arc Music Productions Int Ltd A Naxos World Production Filmed by Landing Lights Studio Recording Engineer: Roderick Buchanan-Dunlop
