Painting the Irish West – Achill Island in the Spirit of Paul Henry In this long-form painting session, I work through an Achill Island landscape inspired by the quiet power and monumentality of Paul Henry’s paintings. Over the course of about ninety minutes, the painting is built slowly and deliberately — from the first warm wash to the final light on the clouds. As I paint, I talk through my decisions in real time: how I simplify the landscape, divide the composition into light and dark, and use colour not to copy nature, but to interpret it. Mountains are pushed back with air and light, foregrounds are given weight and warmth, and the sky becomes a structure in its own right — heavy with weather and movement. This is not a demonstration of speed or precision, but of seeing. Of choosing atmosphere over accuracy, and mood over detail — very much in the spirit of Paul Henry’s approach to the Irish landscape. 00:00 - Introduction 00:34 - Color palette explanation 00:59 - Applying a wash 02:20 - Drawing 05:30 - Notan 09:30 - Placing in the darks 11:35 - Blocking in color 21:30 - Painting in details over the blocks 1:25:18 - Reveal of the finished painting In this video you’ll see: A limited palette inspired by traditional Irish landscape painting Using a warm wash and notan to establish structure early Building monumental clouds with directional brushwork Simplifying complex landscapes into strong colour shapes Pushing space and distance using temperature and value How to stay loose, expressive, and responsive while painting This is a quiet, unhurried painting session — ideal if you’re interested in painting Irish landscapes, working alla prima, or learning how colour and atmosphere can do more than detail ever could. Settle in, take your time, and paint along if you like. 🎨 🎨 Live Zoom Painting Classes 👉 https://www.mcsherrystudio.com/video-... ☕ Support the Studio Buy me a coffee if this helped you paint! 👉 https://www.buymeacoffee.com/KevinMcSh 🎨 Beginners' complete video course.
