#unitedstates #refugees #2025 There is a lot of talk about changes to immigration law in the US. but as of March 2025, these changes do not affect refugees currently living in the US. In this video, we will talk about what refugees in the US can do to be safe. If you registered with UNHCR in another country and came to the US through the United States Refugee Admissions Program, you have refugee status. Unless you commit certain crimes like domestice violence, child abuse or child neglect, you will keep your refugee status. If you are a refugee in the US and worried about your status, here are two things that you can do to keep yourself and your family safe. Carry a copy of a document with your current status with you or have a picture of it on your phone. This might be your I-94, green card or naturalization certificate. DO NOT carry the original document. You do not want to lose it. Become a citizen as soon as possible. Refugees are eligible to apply for citizenship once they’ve been here for 4 years and 10 months. To become a citizen, you must speak some English. Start taking ESL classes now, use English when you’re out in the community, practice speaking English with your friends, and watch English TV and videos. The better your English is, the easier your life will be in the US. If you are a refugee and you need to travel outside the country, you should talk to a reliable immigration lawyer first. Refugees with and without green cards are required to apply for a refugee travel document before they leave the US. Refugees who are citizens do not need refugee travel documents because they will travel with their US passports. Refugees should never travel with their passports from their home country. If you are a refugee with a green card and have any sort of criminal issue, you should not leave the country without talking to a lawyer first. The US government can refuse to let refugees with green cards who have committed certain crimes back into the United States. We know that this is an uncertain time.
