These poems celebrate the beauty and simultaneous simplicity and struggle that is life. The first song is a merry folk-inspired jig, short and playful in nature and referencing my and Sierra’s middle names, Skye and Lee, as we enjoy adventuring. The second song is more intense and dramatic, full of stark dynamic contrasts and emphasizing the danger of the wild. The third song is a tender and solemn anthem at first, but then erupts into a joyful chorus celebrating the beauty of life and the value of our time together. This piece was written in March 2023 to be performed by the Divergent Trio at Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts for their June 2023 summer program for composers and performers. Thank you to Corrine Byrne, Ralph Farris, and Donald Berman for bringing this piece to life. And thank you to Cailin Smith and Josue Negrete for recording this with me at Winchester Unitarian. Lyrics: 1. Dragonfly Creek Let’s take a peek At Dragonfly Creek Where the Skye and the Lee meet to play, Where dragonflies dance And find romance In the long light of summer day. Royal blues shimmer, Pixie greens glimmer, Black beaus with polka dot wings - All free to play In their merry fairy way; As they flutter by, the butterfly sings: “Dance for the log And dance for the leaf, Dance for the giggling creeks, Dance for the Skye And dance for the Lee, Dance whether anybody peeks.” 2. Dragonfly Pond A haven hidden By ferns and trees, The hunting ground For sustenance and status. Tiny dragons crouch in wait, Flexing four black wings In anticipation of launching To devour the diminutive denizens Of the glossy pond. Icy blue males pursue Warm gold mates, Skimming the surface with Deadly grace. Rivals whir by with Big, green eyes, Deftly diving in To split the dance partners. Fierce combat ensues As the golden beauty Dips to algaed safety To bring new life While her mate defends her. With lightning alacrity, The icy blue protects The mother of his offspring, Ensuring their place In Dragonfly Pond. 3. Dragonfly Bridge Where do the dragonflies go to die? Perhaps they enfold themselves with gossamer wings And go to the bridge over silent creek, Where all the others line up on either side In reverent procession, Ready for the sendoff into wavering water. Shadow falls upon the bridge and Motion ceases, But soon the sun returns to dance on branch and wave And Dragonfly Bridge erupts Into a joyous kaleidoscope, Celebrating the journey Of those who have left.
