Certainly these pieces are exquisite jewels of piano music on a par with such popular compositions as Chopin's Nocturnes or, for example, Henselt's less popular but just as beautiful Etudes. I have listened to and re-listened to this entire Mendelssohn cycle as performed by Barenboim, and for some reason I always thought that Mendelssohn only had 2 Venetian Gondola Songs. Recently, however, to my embarrassment, I saw that there was a third. When I listened to it, I realized that this is now my favorite of the three, although it used to be the one in F sharp minor. It's not even really a song in its purest form. I'd say it's more of a picture of nature after a thunderstorm, when the rain ends, you hear the echoes of thunder in the distance and the first rays of sunlight are about to appear through the gloomy, overcast clouds. And in this moment, when one manifestation of nature is replaced by another, it is possible to grasp, to catch this sense of the silent flow of time. I suppose for such content and influence on me, this Mendelssohn's piece is now my favorite. 🔑Why I do it, and why exactly: Throughout my interest in classical piano music, as I listen to any piece I like, I look for the best performance for me among a huge number of recordings. What they all have in common is that in one way or another, I hear that a musician who has spent so much time achieving this extreme level of skill still fails to master the music from the first to the last note and doesn't play the way he would like. The same problem plagued me time and time again as a pianist. Being honest with myself, I find that every time I can't perform the music from beginning to end the way I hear it. And for me, the most important thing is the music, how it sounds, not how that sound is achieved. Then I decided to start recording music step by step and edit what was already been recorded but wasn't satisfying. In this work I manage to keep mistakes and inaccuracies to a minimum. Literally - to bring every note, every stroke to the sound that I would like to hear in the end. This work is very similar to what Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Medtner, and other outstanding musicians did in the early twentieth century when they recording their piano performances on mechanical ampico piano's rolls (for example, it took Medtner two days to record several pieces and two months to edit the roll; now I can spend a week for all of this work and this is even more than enough sometimes).
