The waiter places crystal glasses on the table.) Tanya (smiling): “Rajeev, order something…the pasta and soups here are very famous.” Rajiv (flipping through the menu card nervously): “Yes… that is fine, but… have you seen the pricesFive hundred for a soup!” Tanya (laughing): “Oh Rajeev, you too! How will you live your life if you think like this? Today it is from my side.” Rajeev (slowly): “Every time it happens from your side Tanya…that's why I feel shy.” Narration – There was hesitation in Rajiv's voice and helplessness in his eyes. His simple clothes, worn shoes and downcast eyes showed that he was not a part of this environment. Whereas Tanya's branded dress, handbag and confidence were proof of how different their worlds are. Tanya (gently): “Rajeev, don’t think like that… I like you because you are honest, truthful… not because of money.” Rajiv (with a bitter smile): “But your father will not think so.” Scene – Rajeev's house: broken walls, ashes from the stove Narration: Rajiv's house was at the end of an old locality, where the street was full of stink and lines of drains. Plaster falling from the walls, broken cots and old utensils kept in the corners were telling about their condition. Angoori (Rajeev's mother): “Mohan son, did you earn anything today?” Mohan (with a tired face): “Amma, I did not get contract work today… I will try tomorrow.” Lakshmi (sister-in-law): "Hey, what should I feed the children till tomorrow? Even the last handful of flour was finished this morning." Rajni (younger sister): “I am going to Neha di’s house… maybe I can get the job of washing utensils.” Gudiya (little girl, innocently): “Mother, will dal be made today?” Angoori (holding the baby in her lap): “Yes daughter, you will become…when God wishes.” Narration: Rajeev stands silently at the door and listens to everything. As if someone had placed a stone in his heart. Rajeev (slowly): “Amma, today I have brought some money… a friend had given it… I was saying that the family will just eat something.” Angoori (in a harsh voice): “No son, we do not eat others' lamps! Even if we have half a stomach, we do not beg.” Rajeev (being sensitive): “Amma, that was not begging… just with love…” Lakshmi (in a sweet voice): "Oh leave it Amma, if someone helps you whole heartedly then don't refuse. We will bring something for Gudiya-Chintu." Narration: Smiles return to the house for a moment, but the hunger is still there. Scene – Mahishmati Madam's Bungalow (Shining floors, expensive paintings on the walls, and the movement of servants.) Mahishmati (to Bourgeois Chic): “Hey Lakshmi, there is leftover food from yesterday's party… take it, it will be useful for you guys.” Lakshmi (with folded hands): Yes madam, very kind… it will be good for the children.” Rajni (whispering softly): “Didi, it will be three days old, right?” Lakshmi (being careful):* “What difference does it make Rajni, for us this is the food of kings.” Narration: Mahishmati smiles—she thinks she has done a great favor. Scene – Poor House Evening Narration: Lakshmi and Rajni reach home carrying the bag. Gudiya (jumping): “Mom, what have you brought? Sweets?” Chintu (excitedly): “I wanted chicken, mother!” Lakshmi (hesitating a little): “Bittu, look at this… there is biryani, paneer, sweets too!” Rajni (opening the lid): “It just smells a little… but what a fragrance, wow!” Narration: Everyone sits around to eat. Angoori (sniffing): “Lakshmi, this is looking stale.” Lakshmi (being careful): “Yes Amma, but the children have never seen such food… let us just taste a little.” Chintu (innocently): “Mother, I will eat everything!” Narration: He picks up the plate and starts eating biryani greedily. After some time his face turns pale. Chintu (groaning): “Mother…stomach ache…” Lakshmi (nervous): “Hey Ram! Son Chintu… what happened?” Rajni (scared): “Was the food bad?
