(8 May 1978) notes: col print location: rhodesia title: rhodesia training serviced date: 05/08/78 no: lnc92945 date shot: recent length: 56ft seconds: 1.30 sound: natsof date of arrival: film shows: report on troops undergoing training in rhodesian army. troops under instruction and going out on mock patrols. soldiers coming under simulated enemy fire and firing back. lead in: the political crisis within the rhodesian transitional government remained unresolved on sunday (7 may) after the internal nationalist organization of bishop abel muzorewa postponed a decision on whether to leave the interim administration. the bishop's united african council has threatened to quit the pre-majority rule interim government if black co- minister of justice and law and order bryon hove is not reinstated. hove was dismissed on april 28 after urging a rapid africanisation of the police and armed forces. meanwhile, the previous day (6 may) the rhodesian military command announced the deaths of 23 people in the continuing war being waged between rhodesian security forces and black nationalist guerrillas. here is a report on the arduous training undergone by rhodesian army recruits. feet r/secs 7 0.11 ms soldier crossing stream via log while explosives are fired. 14 0.22 mcu troops under instruction from sergeant 38 1.01 ms troops out on mock patrol. coming under simulated enemy fire. troops running through grass and firing (4 shots) 56 1.30 ms soldiers dancing and chanting songs commentary: the troops' training is hard and realistic with live ammunition and grenades being used. this soldier is coming under heavy simulated enemy fire whilst crossing a stream during part of a battlecourse training. back on the parade ground, the soldiers come in for some plain speaking from the sergeant (up natsof for sergeant swearing at troops). the number of black soldiers in the rhodesian army is increasing largely because there are not sufficient numbers of white rhodesians to carry on the war alone against the numerically superior black nationalist guerrillas. these soldiers are out on a mock patrol in the rhodesian bush country and are being taught to fire back should they find themselves in the position of being shot at by enemy forces. up natsof for soldiers chanting till end of film.
