Breathtaking Batanes: Our Trip to Sabtang Island | Batanes | Philippines | We.Are.Wanderful

Trip to Sabtang Island Sabtang, Batanes | Philippines MARCH 23, 2015—We visited the island municipality of Sabtang on the 2nd day of our Batanes Family Tour. Sabtang Island is to the south of Batan Island, where the capital town of Basco is located. To go to Sabtang we have to ride a pump boat locally called a "Faluwa" from the Port of Ivana, some 4.5 kilometers south of Basco. The Faluwa is kind of unique because it has a wide body and rounded bottom, unlike the typical outrigger bancas I am familiar with and seen all around the country. It is kind of similar to the Sampans in HK in terms of its built and appearance. The boat ride to Sabtang takes approximately 45 minutes. Before reaching the Port of Sabtang, which is by the way the single point of entry and exit to and from the island, the boat will pass through a section of the sea with huge waves. Some 6- to 20-foott waves in my estimation. It is kind of unnerving if it is your first time to experience it. The waves are so high at times you only see water all around you (when the boat is at the bottom of a trough). But it is nothing to be concerned about. All you need is observe the local passengers and you will know that this is nothing out of the ordinary (for them).
