The 8th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment was mustered into Confederate service on June 10th, 1861 for the duration of the war at Richmond Virginia, the earliest regiment to do so making it the first Confederate regiment enlisted for the entire war. The men would come from many counties from central and southern Alabama. The regiment would be first sent to Yorktown, Virginia for the first eleven months of its service and placed in the brigade under General Roger Pryor. The 8th would be instrumental at the start of the Peninsula campaign when it helped General magruder in deceiving McClellan in believing that the Confederates had more men than they actually had. They would be baptised in fire at the Battle of Williamsburg during their retreat towards Richmond and then participating at the battle of Seven Pines. After the Battle, the 8th would be placed in a new Brigade under the command of General Cadmus Wilcox along with the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 14th Alabama regiments. The 8th would continue fighting in the Seven days battle, fighting at Mechanicsville, losing half of 350 at Gaines Mill and going toe to toe with the Yankee Irish Brigade for the first time at Frazier’s Farm, losing another half of 180. Then they would go on the Northern Virginia Campaign, not being engaged at Second manassas but being under fire, losing more men. In war of rights, you can find the 8th Alabama in Piper’s Farm as they desperately defend against the yanks coming from the sunken road and Pry House where in an ahistorical setting they advanced to attack McClellan’s headquarters.
