Join us on a cool winter’s day in Powfoot, walking from the village along the wide shoreline of the Solway Firth to explore the remains of the former Royal Ordnance Factory Powfoot. Opened in 1940, the factory produced nitrocellulose propellant for Britain’s wartime munitions programme. Designed with widely spaced buildings and protective blast bunds, it continued operating into the Cold War before closing in the early 1990s. Today, parts of the site have found new life as small independent businesses, while others stand abandoned against the Solway sky. We also take in drone views of the striking red coastal quarry worked by Hoddam Contracting Co Ltd, cutting into glacial sands and gravels laid down at the end of the last Ice Age. On our return along the beach, the vast tidal sweep of the Solway is revealed — one of the UK’s largest tidal ranges, exposing mudflats and saltmarsh that support overwintering birdlife. Back in the village, we explore Powfoot’s red-brick terraces and villas, built in the late 19th century as part of an ambitious seaside resort plan, before finishing at the now-silted tidal bathing pool, constructed around 1899. A coastal walk layered with geology, wartime industry and quiet Victorian ambition. 📍 Location: Powfoot, near Annan, Dumfries and Galloway 🥾 Route: Village – Beach – Former Factory Site – Quarry – Village – Tidal Pool 📅 Filmed: Winter
