West Yorkshire’s Queensbury Tunnel is a Victorian engineering feat of great scale and significance. Its future is uncertain though due to a Ministerial decision to fund a £7.5M abandonment scheme, just four years after £7.3M was spent making the structure safe. The ambitious alternative, promoted by the local community, is for the tunnel to become the centrepiece of an active travel network, connecting Bradford, Keighley and Halifax. According to a recent feasibility study, it would deliver high value for money. This video tells the story of how battle lines have been drawn, with bureaucrats from the Department for Transport and National Highways on one side, and passionate campaigners on the other. There should be no contest, but failure and misrepresentation by the state has left the outcome in the balance.
