Te Araroa Trail Thru Hike December 1st, 2022 Day 23, 24.5 Miles What is it about zero days that make you so tired?! Every time we take one we are so excited for a full day of rest/food inhalation/ and relaxation, and one would think this would fuel you for the next leg of the journey. Yet, without fail every time we leave a zero the next day is a struggle to find energy! Today was no different, excited to be stepping again, but whew, having to dig deep for some simple miles. Well… simple miles in general, the morning miles were something “different.” We entered Whangamarino Track and it began. It first began with just the obligatory amount of mud… and then the mud became a slide… and then we had to use said slide to literally slide on our bottoms to get down switchbacks… and then some nice impromptu flooded valley water fording’s… rinse and repeat, again literally! She was a doozy! It was all worth it though because at the very end of this track, we had one of the most special and amazing moments of our lives. Funny enough we had just listened to a TED Talk yesterday about word choice and the concept behind actually using words for their meaning. An example, if you call everything amazing, what do you actually call something when it is amazing? Well, this moment was truly amazing. We met the friendliest, sweetest, most lovable cow, who let us pet her! Not only let us pet her, but actively kept coming back and asking for more pets! Even a hand lick, and a scratch of the jowls…. She was beautiful. She followed us and had the most expressive eyes we have ever seen in a cow. Honestly, if this sounds like a love letter, it is, she will always be in our hearts. After this how does anything else even stand up to it? The rest of the day was mostly road walking around the flooded river along Springhill Road to Rangiriri where we finally were able to get back on single track. The flavor of the single track depended on the property adjacent, as it was river track, some grass was knee high, some shin, some excellently manicured, very dependent on the property ownership. Arriving at a free camping spot a mile or so before Huntley, it was early, only 6pm~, but we were happy to call it a day. We could have gone a few more hours, but again the town gravity clung to us to heavily, and we need a wake up on trail tomorrow to properly shake it off. Moral of the story today… find yourself a friendly cow, and give her a pet, you will be amazed (yes real meaning of the word) at the joy you will find.
