Sexual Abuse and PTSD in Multi-Plaintiff Litigation with Mark Levy, MD & Charles Saldanha, MD

On June 9th, 2021, we held a special webinar for lawyers who specifically practice in multi-plaintiff litigation. Experts.com members Mark Levy, MD and Charles Saldanha, MD, provided a succinct and focused discussion on the topic of PTSD in mass sexual abuse cases. Dr. Levy and Dr. Saldanha are practicing forensic #psychiatry physicians whose national practice has specialized in multi-plaintiff and class action forensic assessments. The webinar covered the legal and clinical definitions of sexual abuse and some brief discussion of the prevalence. In all but 10 states, legislation has been either proposed or adopted to alter the statute of limitations with respect to childhood sexual abuse, allowing lawsuits to be brought even when the statute would normally have passed. The doctors covered risks, vulnerabilities, and resiliency factors experienced by those suffering sexual abuse. Additionally, this webinar covered alternate consequences of trauma which do not rise to the level of #ptsd. They also covered the difference between a clinical or treating psychiatrist and the role of an independent forensic #expertwitness. Finally, as there are logistical considerations in mass tort issues (i.e. multiple victims or plaintiffs), there was some discussion of the forensic assessment process and how to conduct assessments where there are a large number of parties involved.
