Ninja 400 Track Bike Project - Removing the PAIR System

The PAIR system (Pulsating Air Injection Reactor) on a Kawasaki Ninja 400 injects fresh air into the exhaust system to help burn off unburnt fuel. This system is designed to improve emissions on bikes with stock exhausts. However, it can cause exhaust popping and backfiring when aftermarket exhausts are installed. An eliminator kit, like the Jetprime kit we used here, bypasses the PAIR system, effectively removing it and eliminating the popping and backfiring issues. Where is the PAIR System on a Ninja 400? It’s mounted on the top center of the engine directly over the exhaust ports. It runs out the right side of the motor where it connects to the airbag and electrical circuit. To remove it, all you need to do is take off both side fairings and you’ll have access to it. Benefits of a PAIR System Eliminator are these: 1. Eliminates Popping and Backfiring - By bypassing the PAIR system, eliminator kits remove the source of the additional oxygen that causes the popping and backfiring. 2. Facilitates Dyno Tuning - With the PAIR system disabled, you can achieve more accurate air-fuel ratio readings for tuning. 3. Disables the Fault Indicator Light - Some eliminator kits also include a module to bypass the fault indicator light that may come on when the PAIR system is removed on later model bikes.
