While working in a mental hospital my first 6 months after graduating nursing school, I almost got stabbed with a fork by a psych patient. At the time, I was floated to one of the most challenging units in the psychiatric ward, with the most severely mentally ill patients. As I was doing my late night rounds I found a patient who was self harming with a fork. She then proceeded to threaten to STAB ME (with a fork)! Working in a mental hospital was honestly one the most challenging periods of my life since becoming a registered nurse. That being said, I learned so much and I am very thankful for the experience.
