We took a trip to the Dean Forest Railway in the Forest of Dean, Gloustershire for a ride behind locomotive 5541, a 4575 class small Praire tank engine. The route was part of the former Severn and Wye Railway which ran from Lydney to Cinderford and the current line is 4.25 miles (6.8 km) long with plans to extend into the middle of the Royal Forest adding an extra 4 miles. The society that operates the line started steam locomotive operations in 1971 and bought the trackbed and line from British Rail in 1986. The railway has an impressive collection of locomotives and wagons with trains operated by both steam and diesel locomotives as well as diesel multiple units. Norchard station has a museum, shop and cafe with plenty of free parking. The area is beautiful and perfect for walking around.
