This Christmas Responsorial Psalm is rooted in Psalm 96, a royal and missionary psalm that calls all creation and all nations to worship the Lord who comes to reign. Psalm 96 opens with the command: “Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.” (Ps 96:1) In Scripture, a “new song” is always sung when God performs a new act of salvation. At Christmas, this new song reaches its fulfilment when the angel proclaims in the Gospel: “Today a Savior has been born for you; He is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11) Psalm 96 proclaims the Lord as: Savior – “Proclaim His salvation day after day” (v.2) King – “Say among the nations: The Lord reigns” (v.10) Judge – “He comes to judge the earth” (v.13) These titles find their perfect meaning in Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem. The One who comes to judge the world comes first as a child, bringing salvation, peace, and righteousness. Psalm 96 also invites creation itself to rejoice: “Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad; let the sea resound… let the trees of the forest sing for joy.” (vv.11–12) At Christmas, heaven and earth truly unite — angels sing, shepherds rejoice, and creation welcomes its Creator. This psalm is therefore uniquely suited for the Christmas Night and Day liturgy, where the Church proclaims: Salvation revealed Christ’s kingship announced God’s justice established in mercy and truth 🎄 Sing a new song to the Lord — today the Savior is born.
