Yes, children can develop cataract. Normally cataract is an age related disease. Usually it happens in patients above 45 to 50 years of age. Rarely does it develop at a younger age group and even at birth. When cataract develops, right from birth it is called as congenital cataract and when it happens after sometimes in children or in adolescence it is called as developmental cataract. Birth these things can happen in children. a simple eye checkup conducted at birth in high risk patients or in 6 months of age in those patients who are not at risk, can detect a cataract in children. When the cataract grows it appears as a whitish structure in the pupillary area, this can also be noted by the parents but however by the time it happens it is relatively late, hence periodic examination is required in children. When a cataract appears in the initial stages, the eye doctor might prescribe glasses only and watch this cataract over a period of time. however in some cases where the cataract is advanced or when the cataract is there only in one eye, causing a significant loss of vision only in one eye, the eye doctor may prescribe a simple surgery where he may remove this cataract and place a lens inside the eye. However nowadays it is a very safe surgery with advanced techniques with advanced intraocular lenses that are available to us. With the advancement of intraocular lenses ,it is possible to give the child, completely normal vision even without any glasses.
