February 1st is Saint Brigid's Day and marks the first day of spring in Ireland or imbolc as it was known in pre-Christian times. Here I take a walk around the old church and graveyard at Faughart, County Louth which is said to be the birthplace of Saint Brigid who is one of Ireland's three patron saints. The site contains a holy well dedicated to Brigid who was born in 453AD and the possible remains of a round tower. Interestingly, County Kildare also claims to be the birthplace of Saint Brigid. In 2023 Saint Brigid's Day will become a national holiday in Ireland, to join Saint Patrick's Day which is celebrated on March 17th. Although the day is the 1st of February, the public holiday will be held on Monday 6th of February as first Monday of the month. In 1318 Scottish king Edward Bruce, brother of the more famous Robert the Bruce, was killed in battle at Faughart and is said to be buried here.
