Beer brewing is an age old activity, taking place since around the 6th millennium BC. Archaeological evidence even suggests emerging civilizations such as the ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians brewed beer! Today, brewing is seeing a global resurgence on both a professional and amateur level, garnering increasing media attention. In 2015, there are over 1,200 breweries in the UK, 4,000 in the US, 700 in France, and many more elsewhere. Join us for our final public lecture of 2015 where we will debate the art of creating beer. In this panel discussion, professional and amateur brewers will lead you through a journey of the brewing process from their perspectives, exploring the science within. They will highlight their reliance on chemistry and chemists for their innovation and insight to continually improve the quality of their beers (sharing a few anecdotes along the way!). Paddy Johnson, former head brewer and master brewer of Courage, now of his own brewery Windsor and Eton, will Chair a panel of Derek Prentice, Phil Lowry and Niall Taylor. Derek is a celebrated professional brewer, previously of Truman's, Young's and Fuller's and now of Wimbledon Brewery. Phil is a well-travelled homebrew and pro brewer. He founded the London Brewers' Alliance and is now working with hops at Simply Hops & Barth Haas. Niall is a biochemist by training, who enjoys using his scientific expertise to improve the quality of his home brews. The panel comes with a wealth of brewing experience and hopes to leave you with a greater understanding of brewing, beer and the industry.
