Over Labor Day Weekend 2015, steam locomotive 2-8-4 Nickel Plate Road #765 visited Steamtown NHS to pull a pair of trips out of Scranton, PA as part of Norfolk Southern's 21st Century Steam program. Both trains traveled over the same route via the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad - but to different destinations. Saturday, September 5, the Berk handled a 12-car train from Scranton to the Delaware Water Gap - the train was named "The Phoebe Snow" after the famous advertising campaign from the DL&W Railroad. Monday, September 7 featured #765 pulling the train to East Stroudsburg, PA and return. Both trips, after dropping off passengers at their respective stations, travelled through the Delaware Water Gap itself before the engine was turned on the wye at Portland, PA. Saturday's footage was from on the train, via the rare "open vestibules" on the train, thanks to my GoPro camera - and Monday's footage makes up the majority of the shots, from chasing the trip. #765 handled the train marvelously both days, and it was a real treat seeing this engine pulling trips through the Pocono Mountains. Thanks to the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society for pulling these trips off - and hopefully, we will see them again in the near future. Enjoy!
