with Grace Burns, piano ~~~ Charles Tomlinson Griffes was an American composer known for his fusion of Impressionism, Romanticism, and early modernist styles. His Poem for Flute and Orchestra, written in 1918, is one of his most celebrated works, reflecting a rich harmonic palette and evocative atmosphere. Originally composed for flute and piano and later orchestrated, Poem is a rhapsodic, single-movement work that flows seamlessly between dreamy lyricism and moments of passionate intensity. Drawing inspiration from French Impressionism, particularly Debussy and Ravel, the piece showcases lush harmonies and colorful orchestration, allowing the flute to sing with expressive freedom. With its fluid structure and vibrant tonal shifts, Poem remains a staple of the flute repertoire, celebrated for its emotional depth and atmospheric beauty. Griffes orchestrated the work in 1919, and the orchestral version was premiered the same year by flutist Georges Barrère with the New York Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Walter Damrosch. - MBM
