Reducing global poverty is one of public health’s most pressing issues, as an estimated 700 million people worldwide live in extreme poverty. Economist Abhijit Banerjee takes an evidence-driven approach to improving the lives of the poor by using rigorous field experiments to systematically test a range of interventions, such as giving low-income households a lump sum of cash or guaranteeing them a minimum monthly income. For revolutionizing the field of development economics, Banerjee shared a 2019 Nobel Prize with his wife, Esther Duflo, and economist Michael Kremer. The citation noted that the laureates’ research “has considerably improved our ability to fight global poverty.” In this fireside chat, Banerjee will answer your questions about the causes of global poverty and how to combat it.
