Today is the FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT – Jesus crosses the Sea of Galilee to Bethsaida and a massive crowd follows him. They were hungry and Jesus decides to feed them all with only five loaves of bread and two small fish. Everyone was well-feed, but now they want to make him king. What does Jesus do? “Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.” Fourth Sunday in Lent – ACNA Book of Common Prayer (2019), p 606 • Welcome to DEAFCHURCH TOGETHER, I’m Fr. Bob Ayres • Feeding 5000 in all four gospels; 4000 in Matthew and Mark • In Bethsaida; NE coast Sea of Galilee; Philip’s hometown • Gospel of John uses events to teach deeper truths. • Gather a group and use these videos to discuss and learn together. • Let's calm our hearts for worship and learning from God’s word. John 6:1-15 Some time after this, Jesus crossed over to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. It is also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd of people followed him. They had seen the signs he had done by healing sick people. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside. There he sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover Feast was near. 5 Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him. So he said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test Philip. He already knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Suppose we were able to buy enough bread for each person to have just a bite. That would take more than half a year’s pay!” 8 Another of his disciples spoke up. It was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He said, 9 “Here is a boy with five small loaves of barley bread. He also has two small fish. But how far will that go in such a large crowd?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down. About 5,000 men were there. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks. He handed out the bread to those who were seated. He gave them as much as they wanted. And he did the same with the fish. 12 When all of them had enough to eat, Jesus spoke to his disciples. “Gather the leftover pieces,” he said. “Don’t waste anything.” 13 So they gathered what was left over from the five barley loaves. They filled 12 baskets with the pieces left by those who had eaten. 14 The people saw the sign that Jesus did. Then they began to say, “This must be the Prophet who is supposed to come into the world.” 15 But Jesus knew that they planned to come and force him to be their king. So he went away again to a mountain by himself. • Jesus was exhausted; Luke tells us Herod had killed John the Baptist; Jesus needs rest • John tells us it was near Passover; huge crowds going to Jerusalem; heard about Jesus • Jewish people were always looking for Messiah, Jesus healed many, wanted to see him • Asked Philip who knew the area; identified impossible barriers (cost, numbers, etc) • Andrew came up with boy who had 5 loaves, 2 fish; trusted Jesus who feed 5000 men+ • Lesson is to take “faithful risks” not foolish, but depend on God for results. • Crowd wants Jesus to be their king; keep them feed, meet all their needs; make life easy • But would be disappointed because hungry again by next meal • First, they would appreciate it, then expect it, then be mad when not provided; spoiled • Why? It is our nature. We are naturally selfish. We become weak, cranky, unhappy. • Jesus’ miracles were to show two things: 1) his compassion 2) his power as God’s Son • Spiritual food will inspire, equip, and empower us to become strong and givers to others • “Jesus went away by himself.” Still struggling inside, but also concerned about crowd. • Remember temptation of Jesus in wilderness? Question what kind of messiah would be. • 1) Social Worker (turn stones to bread), 2) Miracle Man (jump off cliff, angels will save you), 3) Powerful King (bow down, all kingdoms for you). • Jesus was the “suffering servant” written about in Isaiah; sacrificial lamb for our sins. • Even good things, feeding people, spiritual high, excellent organizations/governments may become barriers for the “champ” things, forgiveness of our sins and eternal life. • Trust Jesus to work in you and through you for others. Then we can see amazing changes in our lives and others. Discussion Questions: 1) Imagine yourself being in the hungry crowd. What would have been your response? 2) What miracle in the Old Testament would this remind you of? (hint: wilderness) 3) Practically, how might we better help others who are hungry, hurting, or lonely?
