Bart Layton interview on Crime 101: Old-school thriller vibe, practical action & social commentary in LA Bart Layton explains how he came to adapt Don Winslow’s short story Crime 101 after reading the manuscript during a bleak winter lockdown and recognising a “sunbleached” thriller with a decisive ending. Layton says he wanted to create a big-budget film capturing the feel of a classic Saturday-night cinema outing, recalling the character-led Hollywood movies he grew up with in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. He comments on how contemporary action cinema can prioritise spectacle over feeling, arguing that suspense only resonates when audiences care about the people at its centre. Layton reflects on influences ranging from William Friedkin and Steve McQueen to Michael Mann’s Heat and Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight, and describes his aim to keep the film heightened yet grounded. He outlines his approach to tension, stating that anticipation is built structurally and sustained by staying close to characters’ perspectives. Layton favours practical filmmaking over heavy visual effects, including shooting at real speed to keep action visceral. He discusses casting and tone, explaining how he maintained a balance of thriller momentum with understated comedy. Layton explains why social commentary mattered, using LA’s inequality to question who the real criminals are. Crime 101 only in cinemas February 13.
