It's usually caused by an overgrowth of bacteria, bacteria toxins, and excess skin cells. Posterior Blepharitis is located on the posterior side of the eyelid margin and usually involves the oil glands of the eyelid (meibomian glands). All of this can create a matrix of bacteria called a Biofilm, and this is what can make treating blepharitis so challenging. Treatment for blepharitis has been around for a long time, but may only scratch the surface of breaking the cycle of blepharitis and getting rid of the biofilm. Classic treatment may include: baby shampoo, which was recommended in the past, but not recommended anymore, warm compresses, eyelid scrubs, and antibiotic/steroid ointments. Luckily there have been improvements in treatment, and is more advanced to help treat blepharitis and get rid of the biofilm.
